what mediation clients say

Making that decision to separate or divorce is often one of the most difficult ones you will ever make, especially if you have children. All those dreams of how you would grow old together and all those future plans you made together come crashing down.  You may feel like you are caught in a storm and there is no way out. You may be overwhelmed with emotions of anger, grief, sadness, and guilt as well as feeling anxious and scared about what the future holds. Often it is really hard to know where to begin, how to start making sense of your situation and how to find a way to move forward and to create a clearer path. When children are involved it can be even more stressful as you are also trying to protect them and minimise the impact of the family breakdown.

Family mediation is an alternative to going to court. A trained professional will help you and you ex-partner to reach agreements about finances, property and child arrangements. The mediator will help you to keep control of the outcomes and ensure the future arrangements are your decisions and not set by the court. The mediator can meet with your children separately so their voices are heard. The mediator can also offer you shuttle mediation if you are not ready to be in the same room as your ex-partner. Mediation can help reduce conflict and improve communication between the couple separating and divorcing. This is important for the children as less conflict means the whole process will be less stressful for them. Mediation is also quicker and cheaper than contested court proceedings. We have developed an infographic to help you understand the process of mediation and the benefits. (See here)

Relate Mid Surrey supports #FamilyMediationWeek 2020 to raise awareness of the benefits of Mediation and as an alternative to going to court when you separate or divorce. If you would like to understand more the first step is to book a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) with one of our mediators to understand if mediation is right for you. You can attend on your own or with your ex-partner. Please call 01737 245 212 or complete the enquiry form here.
