What is Children and Young People’s Counselling?
Children and Young People’s Counselling is for any young person aged 10 plus who’s having problems. Our counsellors can support you with problems like family breakdown; moving in with a second family; bullying at school; friendship groups, new relationships, generally not feeling like yourself, conflict, and a whole range of other issues.
Counselling lets you talk about how you feel, separate from school and home life and can help you get back to enjoying life. Whether it’s depression and mental health concerns or issues with parents or people at school. Talking to a Relate Counsellor can help.
What can I expect in counselling?
You can expect to be helped by a supportive and non-judgmental counsellor at one of our centres in either Epsom or Reigate, or you might want to see a counsellor in school. We currently have counsellors in 10 local schools and colleges.
You can be referred by a teacher, social worker, or you can ask to see a counsellor yourself – what you say is confidential, unless the counsellor is worried for your safety. The first session is to find out if Relate is the right service for you. If it is, then you will be offered regular sessions, which usually take place on a weekly basis.
How can counselling help me?
Many of our young clients tell us that they feel happier after they see a Relate counsellor and are better able to deal with their problems. In some cases, the Relate counsellor helped them to concentrate better in their school work, or get on better with their friends and family.
“Young people hate being talked down to. As a young person’s counsellor you have to be open and honest and give your clients time to open up. When my clients leave they thank me, but I tell them that they have done the hard-work as it isn’t easy talking about the big things that are worrying them.”
